Welcome home.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been fascinated and obsessed with the concept and idea of home. As a child to Korean immigrants in Germany who then went on to live in London and across Europe and the US, home was never based on a geographic location. Rather, home has always been and continues to be a feeling.
To this day I still get a sense of familiarity and calm when flying through Heathrow Airport which had been my home airport for almost a decade. The smell of a wet saw cutting tiles takes me right back to being five years old and ‘helping’ my dad build out the secondary bathroom in our home in Germany. When eating a ripe persimmon I am mentally sitting on my grandmother’s front porch in rural Korea sweltering in the summer heat and enjoying a lazy afternoon accompanied by the sound of cicadas. Though all the memories are on different continents, they are all equally HOME.
In my design work, I thrive to create a physical environment that evokes a lot of the familiar in a subtle way and also invites you to create more memories in the present. My style is inspired by my upbringing in a minimalist Korean household and the beauty in functionality of the Bauhaus movement rooted in Germany. Both the devil and beauty lie in the details, which I pay meticulous attention to.
Decades of living across countries and continents have honed my sense for what’s worth holding on to, what is creating a sense of home and belonging.
