A guest bathroom for dog lovers
This is a typical builder grade guest bathroom. White walls, standard Home Depot -esque light fixture, square mirror with standard white cabinets. A towel ring on the side of the wall next to the sink, and a larger bath towel bar over the toilet.
As a room that will be seen by every guest coming into the house, we really wanted to make a warm and characterful statement. The room transition is inspired by two pieces of artwork of the dogs of the house that were originally put over the toilet. We really leaned into the theme of the dog and gave the room a warm vibe with the fun wallpaper that continues the cheeky dog theme.
When applying wallpaper it’s important to have a smooth wall underneath so that you attain a smooth texture on the wallpaper and also get maximum adherence. Since this bathroom had textured walls, we started off by smoothing out the walls - three days of mudding and sanding to get level 4 walls. The wallpaper is from Milton & King and comes in different colors. The color used here is ‘beige’ and it has a warm grey undertone.
While the wallpaper is the biggest upgrade we did, we also added new shower curtains and moved them all the way up to the ceiling. We removed the towel rails and placed a new one directly onto the cabinet, so it’s in closer reach. Without removing the existing cabinets, it got a fresh paint of coat, more closely to the color of the countertop to merge together while still keeping a warm tone. The builder grade mirror was replaced with an irregularly shaped modern mirror with a black rim to match the new light fixture and the hand towel rail.
Of course the original artwork of the dogs made it back onto the wall as well!
