Mixed Materials Console Table

And it’s even partially recycled!

Almost two years ago we remodeled the mudroom and took it from nothing but a long corridor with blank walls into a functional beautiful space with cubbies for shoes, a bench to sit on a hooks for jackets, hats, and bags. The perfect space to sit down and get the dogs ready for a walk.

I had been craving some more functional and beautiful furniture to help transform this into a warm space. A welcoming hug every time I come home that can also hold the random sunglasses, keys and other knick knacks to keep close to the door (like random things I don’t want to forget in the morning so put close to the door) while still leaving space to style it with beautiful items. Function, absolutely! But I still want it to look beautiful.

I came up with this mixed concrete wood design. The shelves are made from solid white oak, while the vertical structure is made of hand-poured concrete. The ‘recycled’ element comes in form of the terrazzo effect that’s achieved by adding black and white plastic shreds into the concrete mix.

This console table would also be great made with marble slats for a more dramatic look or by mixing wood and metal or metal and concrete for a more brutalist feel.

We made a mold of melanin boards to pour the concrete and while it took a few rounds of trial and error to get it right, I’m really happy with how it turned out. One thing I have learned along the process is that concrete needs a lot of sanding and polishing for a shiny look that really highlights the plastic terrazzo. And sanding is messy! I ended up using the angle grinder to smooth out the surface enough to highlight the terrazzo and turned those terrazzo sides to show on both sides of the table.

The mixed materials console table got styled with the Inga Sempé Matin Lamp (via Design Within Reach) and irregularly shaped mirrors bought on amazon. Pottery bowls are from my own collection.
