A peak into my sculptural office space

For most people, the office is the place they spend most time in after the bedroom. So it should be functional, but also a place where you feel comfortable. To me, that means as little clutter as possible as I already have what feels like a million tabs open in my brain before looking around and worrying about stuff lying around and things not being in order. It also means showcasing things that matter to me. I’ve always loved sculptural and geometric shapes. It instills some kind of sense of order in my head.

And that is reflected in my office space! From the metal chair and the sculptural wood art work that blends in color wide but brings in a lot of forms and interest to the streamlined wall of cabinets and the metal table with the scallop design legs. All the colors are neutral and warm. Lightly textured warm curtains the height of the ceiling and all the art work is neutral. The floor, the cabinets and the lounge chair bring in some deeper brown tones, and then I’m adding metal material in the form of the side table, the office chair and a cold lacquer surface desk.

I originally had thought of cutting one of the cabinet doors open to make a dog bed, but honestly I like keeping that extra dog bed closer to my desk so whenever one of our dogs decides to join me in the office, I can be closer to them. I wouldn’t want it any other way and I’m glad I waited before cutting the cabinet door open.

The plugs are from Prado. They are a little expensive but honestly, best money spent. They fit seamlessly into the black backsplash without any visual disruption. Brass hardware is from Pepe & Carol. As for the brass sconces, I found these on FB Marketplace! As painful as it can be to communicate with people, it’s been a great resource and I have found a few gems here.

The thing that took the longest time was the wall-to-wall cabinet. Five generously sized cabinet doors offer plenty of storage and I love having the large counter height area. I display books and plants but also use this area to sketch, draw or go through paperwork and mail if I don’t feel like sitting down.

The cabinet is stained in General Finishes’ Antique Oak for a rich warm finish. The carcass is made of birch plywood and the doors, and trim are pine. The long wall-to-wall shelf is floating and I decided to cover the wall in thin plywood to give it a more cohesive look. I played around with different options to pull up the plywood even more, but ultimately decided against it for a cleaner design. The design with more built-out shelves along the wall looked too busy, and I wouldn’t be able to reach anything beyond the bottom shelf anyway. At least not without pulling over a ladder. The wave and added paneling above the floating shelf seemed unnecessary. Form follows function, and there really didn’t seem to be much function for it here.

Maybe I’ll change my mind in future. Maybe I’ll add a second floating shelf. But for now, I am settled in my office - a generous space for me and the occasional dog visit.
